For years now, roulette has been one of the most exciting and popular games in both land-based and online casinos. Since the nature of roulette is exciting and thrilling with potentially exquisite rewards, the game is almost a requirement for any casino. Furthermore, the basics of the game are simple — all you have to do is guess as closely as possible, which is the next number that will show up. The croupier or the dealer will “throw” the ball, and it will eventually land on one of the pocket numbers on the wheel.
There are so many casinos out there, so you should make sure that the one you find is legit. The last thing you need is to lose all of your money due to some irregularity or fraud.
Types of Roulette
While the roulette rules are rather simple and mostly apply to any form of it, there are some slight differences between versions of the game. The rule that will apply to almost any table is that the croupier will spin the wheel in one direction after which will release the ball in the opposite direction. After a while, the ball would lose momentum and start falling until it hits one of the deflectors that would cause it to fall on one of the pockets marked by a number.
The goal is to guess the outcome and successfully predict where the ball would land. There are many different options you could pick before the game starts like betting in a certain manner or on either of colors.
The first variation we’ll go through is the European. Here, the wheel would have thirty-seven pockets where the ball could land. Since each wheel has thirty-six numbers, there will be an additional zero pocket in green color. If the ball lands on this slot, the house wins unless someone bets one zero. As we mentioned, the color of the number is green, so it won’t fall in the black/red bet option or any number segment betting option.
Even though there are thirty-seven pockets in total, the payout for the zero is still 35:1. Thanks to this single-zero pocket, the house edge is 2.70%. This variation of the game is more popular because the house edge is lower compared to the American version.
Now, the main difference between these two versions is in the number of zero pockets. While the European offers only one, in the American version, there will be two. They will be located opposite each other, where the second one will be marked as “00.” Due to this slight change, the house edge is doubled, and it’s 5.26%. There will now be 37 pockets, and two of them will provide a major advantage to the house.
Finally, the order or the sequence of numbers is different in these two versions because of the extra pocket.
Several casinos in the U.S. tried implementing the triple-zero version. While this is not something players really love, we should still mention it as a variation of the game. The house edge here is even higher than in the American version, and it is 7.69%. Naturally, players hated this version because even though they lowered the minimum limit for betting, the house advantage still remained. Not only that there are three “losing” pockets, but the chances of hitting the right one are 1:38.
You might have known already that “roulette” is a French word. Furthermore, French roulette is almost quite the opposite of the triple-zero version since it tried to lower the house edge even further. The number we’re referring to is 1.35% because of a few additional rules. While the game itself is played on the regular European wheel, the rules regarding zero are different. Visually, the table is different, and the sequence is the same as in the European one.
Finally, if the player placed bets on even/odd, low/high, or red/black, and the result is zero, the player is able to take advantage of the rule called “en prison,” where they would return half of their bet. Finally, “en prison,” or in jail bet, is halved, and it will remain on the same bet like before. There is also an additional rule that might apply to some casinos called “la partage,” where you will be able to receive back half of the bet after zero is hit.
Since it is illegal to play roulette in California, they invented a different version where instead of the ball, there are cards that are used. A special deck of thirty-eight cards is used. Furthermore, the dealer will place the deck in the automatic shuffler and pick a card that will be the winning number.
Not every variation is available in casinos. For example, you would rarely find a triple-zero wheel in Europe. The French version is rather popular in the casinos in Monte Carlo and in some casinos in the U.S. Whatever you decide, you should know that a lot of players avoid triple-zero and try to find the European version because of that not-so-slight house edge.
